The Boys of Saint Clare’s Part 2

By JosephineMay

The integration of boys and the overall increase in the number of pupils had been successfully implemented in the five year period between 2015 and 2020 with the school by then having 400 pupils, one third of whom were boys. This had been achieved using the ground rules devised by the governors at the outset. It was now considered time to review the procedure, reconsider these rules and recommend any changes. The governors had asked that a committee of teachers, prefects and pupils should give a view on the working of the rules which would be taken into account going forward. This committee being six female and two male teachers, four female and two male prefects, two other sixth formers and two other lower school pupils, met in early 2021 and reported in April of that year as summarised below.

Teaching staff had been increased from 8 to 12 and prefects from 6 to 10 with one third of each being male. The Headmistress remained in post and the appointment of an assistant head was recommended and a male teacher was appointed to this post in August. Future oversight of any changes would remain with the Headmistress.

In future all pupils, not just the girls, would be addressed by their given forenames. In matters of safety and the ambitions for the personal development of pupils, girls would no longer be prioritised and all pupils would be treated equally.

The girls on the committee in particular wanted the female modesty rule abolished. This rule had prevented the girls’ genital area from ever being seen in public and had repercussions for swimming, initiation practices and the administering of corporal punishment. The particular protection for girls was considered old fashioned and patronising in the 21st century when equality was the general rule. It also restricted the freedom of both sexes to indulge in consensual touching and petting on a one to one basis in normal teenage relationships. This recommendation was accepted except for the duration of a girl’s menstrual period when her genitals were not to be publicly exposed.

Corporal punishment would in future only be used for serious disciplinary matters, would only be administered by the Headmistress, and both lower school girls and boys would be caned on their naked buttocks in the privacy of her study. Swimming would be naked for both girls and boys in the lower school, and the new pupils’ initiation ceremony in which they had the school crest rubber stamped in public on each naked buttock would be carried out on all pupils.

Involuntary erections in public would no longer be a punishable offence which meant that cock caning would not be an available manner of discipline.

The prefects would no longer be able to abuse or take advantage of lower sixth pupils domestically or sexually.

The relaxation of rules proposed, and the encouragement of one to one relationships between girls and boys would inevitably result in greater intimacy. Pupils under 16 years of age were reminded that sexual intercourse was illegal and should not happen, whilst other expressions of intimacy needed to be both reasonable and consensual. Sixth form pupils after their 16th birthdays could engage in consensual coupling but should ensure that this was both in private and protected against possible pregnancy.

The school nurse was available at all times for consultation on any intimate matter concerning sexual contacts, contraception and menstruation.

All interested parties agreed that the integration had been a success so far and considered the changes after five years had been to the benefit of all pupils. The exercise would be repeated in 2026 after ten years of co-education when there would hopefully be ample evidence of the long term permanent benefits of a St Clare’s education.
