STREAKING IN MIHAMA
Before we get to the reports of
age 15 through 22 boys streaking through Mihama, let's clarify what we
mean by "Mihama" and "age 15 to 22". There are at least three places in
Japan named Mihama. The streaking occurred in the fishing village of
Mihama Town, Chita District, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The custom
originated in the 18th century. In traditional Japan, you were said to
be one year old at birth, and one year is added to your age each year
on New Years Day. The 15 year old boys who streaked on New Years Day in
2008 were all born in 1994, and would have been 13 according to our
method of reckoning age. The age of 42 was considered to be unlucky,
and the purpose of the streaking was to rinse away the bad luck of men
turning 42.
Boys aged 15 to 22 would spend the evening of New
Years Eve stark naked in the homes of men who would become "unlucky" 42
on New Years Day. At midnight they would leave the men's homes and
gather at the starting point for the naked run. They would run through
the village to the sea, a distance of about one kilometer. They plunged
into the icy cold water to rinse off the bad luck, then the boys would
dress in white for New Years Day.
In the 18th century nudity
was not shameful. Everybody in the village, male and female, went to
the same public bath together, and fishermen often worked naked on
their boats. After World War II Japan became westernized, and that
began to change. Public baths were separated by sex, and people did not
go naked in public. When boys who grew up in westernized Japan came of
age to streak, they were just as embarrassed as American boys would be.
They had to do it because without purging the bad luck, the town would
have bad luck in fishing, and they depended on fishing for their
livelihood. Boys about to turn 15 dreaded the day. They cursed the
"foolish superstition" that required them to run naked.
Girls
of that age in Mihama were ecstatic at the approach of the new year.
The custom of giving Christmas gifts was introduced into postwar Japan,
and girls in Mihama wanted flash cameras as gifts, because the naked
run was at night. Unlike the boys who questioned if the ritual really
was necessary for good fishing, girls fervently defended the tradition
and held that to question it was to insult your ancestors and display
an unpatriotic lack of pride in Japanese culture.
In 1999 a
Japanese law was passed to prohibit displays of nudity of minors.
Technically the participation of boys under 18 Years old (by western
reckoning, under 20 according to traditional age) became illegal, but
since the Mihama naked run was an ancient tradition with religious
overtones, the law was not enforced for years after 1999. Eventually
the internet killed the tradition. Too many photos of the event were
being posted on the web. Too much scandal was stirred up throughout
Japan and other countries. The last naked run was held in 2008. After
that all participants were required to wear a "fundoshi", the
traditional Japanese loincloth.
After a few years without the
traditional nude ceremony it could be seen that there was no bad luck
in fishing. Boys could still participate in the clothed run if they
wanted, but it was now obvious that it had nothing to do with
eliminating bad luck, so many boys chose not to run into freezing water
on New Years. The female residents also stopped encouraging what they
now called a silly custom that promoted a sexist notion that the gods
favored boys and only boys could rinse away bad luck. There has been a
steady decline in participation, and it is likely that even the clothed
ceremony will pass away.
The following accounts, translated
and edited for brevity, were posted on a Japanese site in 2018. They
were posted by men remembering what it was like before 2009 when they
ran naked.

When I was 15 years old and in my third year
of junior high school, I participated in the Mihama Town Naked
Festival. When I left home, I was already completely naked and headed
towards the beach. Since it was a sacred festival, I was told not to
cover myself, so I ran without covering myself. There was a girl from
my class, we made eye contact, and we waved. She took a picture of me.
There were many women near the beach, including elementary school
students, junior and senior high school students, and older women. I
went without covering myself. She took a picture of me. Doesn't this
look like a strip show? Since it was a sacred festival, I was
completely naked and not covering myself, with my genitals fully
exposed.
It seems there are women who have come to see it from other prefectures

I heard that on one of TV Asahi's morning shows, they aired nude images
of Mihama (sometimes with the mosaic censorship missing) early in the
morning, and immediately afterwards , complaints poured in from the
education department or something, and on top of that, a large number
of gay photographers swarmed the festival, forcing the performers to
wear loincloths.

From midnight to 1 AM on January 1st,
as the New Year's Eve bells ring, a total of 80 to 100 naked young men
streak approximately 1 km from their lodgings to the coast of Uenoma
Fishing Port, and perform a purification ritual by wading in the sea.
(This may be canceled in case of strong winds.)
At the festival in Mihama town, the men were mostly young, so they
seemed embarrassed and many covered their penises with their hands.
They certainly don't seem like exhibitionists. I have also witnessed
many women and girls booing because the handsome guy they were
targeting covered his penis with his hand, preventing them from seeing
it.
In my area , all young men aged 15 and over were forced to run
naked to the beach on New Year's Eve and undergo a purification ritual
with seawater. Along the roadside, there were many female spectators,
shivering from the cold, yet still filming our penises dangling as we
ran, taking pictures and videos.

Finally, starting this year, I'll be participating in the New Year's
purification ritual completely naked. Some of the girls I know have
been saying things like, "This year, we'll finally get to see [my
name]'s penis. I can't wait."
Participation is open to first-year
high school students. I don't know how many people will participate in
total. All my friends in the neighborhood are saying things like ,
"Ugh, I don't want to do it... I can't believe we've finally reached
this age..." Well, we 've been complaining to each other since the end
of last year, saying things like, "Next year we'll be exposed too..."
A questionnaire will be sent out by the neighborhood association to
confirm your participation. As I've written before, there's an
atmosphere where participation is expected . A friend who participated
for the first time last year said that he was embarrassed, but felt
there was no other choice. He also said that he thought, "Oh no, I have
to do this again next year..." I feel the same way this year.
The
girls apparently commented things like, "○○'s is
big and cool, " and
"I'm looking forward to seeing it again next year," which made him
think, "Can't you understand how I feel?" In fact, as I mentioned
above, I'm already getting comments from girls in my neighborhood
(ranging from those my age to older women) saying things like, "I can't
wait to see it." "○○'s was like this,"
"△△'s was surprisingly like
this," "Oh, he's short but his dick is big," they say, commenting on
the penises they see. I guess I'll be judged this year too...

We went around to the houses of people who are in their unlucky year,
completely naked, and young girls and older women from the neighborhood
gather at each house. The official reason is that they are helping to
serve the naked man zoni (rice cake soup), but the real purpose is to
judge his penis. lol. They could admire the penises of their classmates
and acquaintances in a warm and bright room. There were loud squeals
and squeals of delight.

Back when I was completely
naked, there were female onlookers everywhere, and they would take
pictures of me with their cameras without any hesitation. Completely
naked. Including close-ups of genitals. Waiting in front of the house,
waiting at the beach. Especially if it's a high school boy, girls from

to each other via text messages, so it spreads like wildfire.

You won't be arrested for secretly filming someone
naked without their permission, using a traditional event as an excuse.
It's especially difficult to arrest a woman, as women generally feel
less guilty about filming men naked. In fact, these days, if you film a
woman secretly filming a man, the person who filmed her is the one who
gets arrested for some kind of nuisance offense. But if even high
school boys are naked in the photos, then it's clearly child
pornography, isn't it?
If the roles were reversed, women would
protest, saying things like, "That's voyeurism!", "That's disrespectful
to women!", and "Don't you feel sorry for women?", completely ignoring
their own faults. Women don't complain even if men are the ones who
suffer, as long as they're not the ones who are harmed. However, this
event also attracts many gay spectators, and videos they've taken are
circulating on the internet and elsewhere.
